Six Great Ways to Modernize Your Garage

The majority of homeowners, whether they live in Broomfield, Parker, or anywhere else in Colorado, use garages for their originally intended purpose, i.e. as spaces in which to park vehicles. Many of these same homeowners also use their personal garage as an additional storage room, where they keep hand tools, power tools, and anything else they don’t want to store in the main part of their house. However, more and more people across the state, and right across the country, are choosing to modernize or convert their garages in some way, in order to turn them into multiple-use spaces. As a reputable garage door company in Broomfield, Parker, and Littleton, we have completed many new door installations for garages that have been upgraded in some way and we’d like to share some of the more practical and interesting ways in which you can modernize your own garage.

Six Ways to Modernize Your Garage: Ideas from Our Garage Door Installation Team

Whether you want to totally transform your garage or you would simply like to add a splash of color, to turn an otherwise dreary space into a more inviting one, you’ll find an idea that you can put to good use in the following list.

  1. Install Air Conditioning & Heating- One of the easiest ways to completely transform a garage is to install efficient HVAC equipment in it. Most garages are not included in centrally ducted systems at the planning stage, which means they can be rather unpleasant spaces in which to hang out at certain times of the year. Adding them to a central system is normally a prohibitively expensive option at best, which is why we recommend considering a ductless mini-split unit instead. You can purchase a ductless mini-split combo air conditioner/heater from any good home improvement store and as long as you hire a qualified HVAC engineer to handle the installation, it shouldn’t be difficult to fit in your garage. Once installed, you will be able to use your garage as a comfortable workspace or hobby area, at any time of the year.
  2. Installing Drywall and Insulation– This is a great idea, especially in combination with our first suggestion above, as it helps to lower the cost of regulating the temperature in your garage. If you have any plans to use your garage as additional living space in the future or you would like to use it for something else, such as a music rehearsal space for your kids, installing drywall and insulation just makes good sense. With a few electrical outlets and some plumbing thrown in, you could turn your garage into a ground-floor bedroom or extra living room quite inexpensively. If you do decide to turn your garage into a bedroom you will probably want to install a different type of door too. An overhead door installation is a good choice for conventional garages and for those that are used as a home workshop. However, such doors are not really suitable for use in bedrooms as far as most people are concerned.
  3. Install a Solar Roof– Whilst this is obviously not a practical suggestion for integral garages, it is a fantastic modernization option for homes with freestanding garages, especially those that are owned by environmentally concerned citizens. With a solar roof on your garage's roof, you could generate enough electricity to power your hybrid vehicles or to provide some of the lighting you use around your home every evening. Even if you are not concerned about the environment, you could lower your electricity costs considerably by installing a solar roof, making it an idea that is worthy of serious consideration. Unless you live in a particularly small house, you probably won’t be able to meet all of your electricity needs with a solar roof on your garage but you will definitely notice a big difference in the size of future utility bills.
  4. Pour a Colored Epoxy Floor– If you don’t want to spend a fortune on converting your garage into additional living space but you would like to make it a more pleasant place in which to spend time, we can highly recommend a colored epoxy floor. Modern epoxy flooring systems come in a huge variety of colors and are available in both matte and gloss finishes. If you want to make a dramatic statement with your garage floor, a colored epoxy floor is the easiest way to achieve your goal. If you enjoy tackling DIY projects around the home, you may like to try installing your own epoxy flooring system. On the other hand, if you have little to no experience in this field, we recommend hiring a local professional to take care of it for you.
  5. Install a New Overhead Door– If your garage is looking a little neglected, there is no more effective way to remedy the situation than by installing a brand new door. With so many different styles and finishes from which to choose, you are sure to be able to find a door that is perfect for your home if you shop around. If you are looking for an overhead door company in the Denver metro area, please feel free to call and speak to us about your needs whenever convenient. We supply and install a wide variety of beautiful garage doors, all of which are available at very competitive prices. If you are not ready to replace your existing door but it needs a little attention, we also offer a professional garage door repair service in the area.
  6. Finish the Walls– Unfinished walls can make almost any space look dull and utilitarian, and this applies especially to spaces such as garages, which are not very exciting in the first place. If you would like to transform your garage into a lighter, brighter, and more welcoming space, you may therefore wish to consider painting the walls after installing the drywall and insulation we suggested earlier. Once you have primed the surfaces in question, simply apply the color or colors of your choice. The best color scheme and type of paint to use will depend on what you are planning to use your garage for in the future and whether it will be permanently occupied or used on an occasional basis

Whichever modernization idea you decide to try in your garage, don’t forget to let us know how it turns out.
